From the number of garden related products and conversations I have on the weekends, one would think I’m a serious gardener. Mais au contraire. The only time I pull a weed out of the ground is if it’s waist-high so I don’t have to bend over.
My jardinage consists of a deep, deep appreciation of my beautiful plot of land (I’ve told you this many times), cutting flowers to make bouquets (or lavender to make Marsi’s lemonade) and snipping herbs to perk-up my otherwise less than scintillating culinary repertoire.
On occasion I will reach up and pluck an apricot or a plum from one of our trees and from time to time perform a slight knee-dip to harvest a tomato or two. That’s about it.
But curiously, I find clever purpose-made instruments with a twist — or twisted, as the case may be — absolutely captivating.
Qualifier: I’ve found in this area, like so many others, one can find amusing items and one can stumble upon tacky items. Here particularly I’ve discovered there seems to be a fine, fine line between the two. For example, I think the escargot watering vessel is quite cute while I find the stupid pink poodle, which serves the same purpose, an example of outrageously bad taste. (I threw her in to make my point. And perhaps you don’t agree with me on the outside chance you’ve dyed your poodle pink.)
The frog tools are for children. Maybe if they start digging and hoeing at a tender age they can be convinced that while playing in the mud it would be great fun to pull up a few weeds. What have you got to lose?
If you wish to keep the garden/entertainment — probably slightly tacky, but nonetheless rather funny — theme going, how about plopping a few grenouille bougies in the middle of the table? This young lady even had the good taste to dress up for the affair.
Let’s call the gussied up frog “kitsch” shall we? I think it demonstrates a certain appreciation and respect for the bizarre and a discerning eye that recognizes the difference between eccentric and obnoxious.
(All of these curiosities hail from the same site: La Chaise Longue.)
