My subjects are eluding me. I give them the drill; nag; repeat the simple instructions — “please tell me five things, more or less, you bought for the new season” — not too complicated. I always say “please.” And then, what do they do? They miss my deadline.
I cannot figure out how they could have anything more interesting or important going on in their lives. I’ve decided it must be a simple lack of discipline.
As a consequence they have left us in a sorry state this week. I’m obliged to cobble together the few responses from those who carved out the two minutes from their busy schedules it takes to answer the absurdly facile question and then to round out the the responses I added moi meme at the end.
Françoise: “Elf” bottines in patent leather. They’re too cute.
Danielle: A large, square red silk scarf in a paisley print; a long — just below the knee — gray cardigan, no buttons and a darker gray short-sleeve cashmere turtleneck.
My most recent purchase was a pair of pseudo riding boots in black. They are spectacular. And that’s it, I’m not buying anything else until spring. I say that every year. . .
Alexandra: A three-quarter trench; another pair of Converse sneakers this time in taupe; absolutely beautiful grayish beige knee-high boots in suede with a high heel — they are gorgeous, but so uncomfortable I’ll probably never wear them; and a caramel suede vest with no buttons.
I haven’t yet bought the cashmere bonnet and leopard print scarf from Eric Bompard, but I definitely will.
Letitia: A hipbone length charcoal gray cashmere boyfriend sweater (on to which those iridescent gray shell buttons will be one day be sewn); a difficult to describe black and light navy blue fine ply cashmere turtleneck, a sort of heathered look(?) perhaps; a long slender, navy cotton scarf with abstract dots of lighter blue, white, gray and black; and a gossamer pearl gray wool scarf with white and prune woven in a bizarre pattern.
Finally, the huge scarf/shawl pictured on Stephanie in gray wool with black dots to go with my two major winter coats — one in gray, one in black — which I’m still not sure wasn’t a mistake. There’s a lot of scarf going on there.
