Welcome to yet another of our on-and-off, whenever I can think of an interesting question, non-scientific, excruciatingly important, highly evocative, never-to-be-missed survey among stylish French women.
This installment asks the question: What two beauty products can you absolutely not live without?
Of course, simple as it seems, it wasn’t. My question was followed by non-stop questions on the part of the those questioned, this is a petite rundown of the exchanges (with my responses in parentheses):
Only two? (Am I not pronouncing deux properly?)
What do you mean by beauty product? (Whatever you say.)
Does shampoo count? (Oui.)
Can I say toothpaste? (Oui.)
Is perfume a beauty product? (If you say so.)
Why only two? (Because I said so, that’s why!)
What if I use one product for more than one thing? (Good for you.)
I’ll call you to tell you the name of the cream I can’t live without. (Does ‘deadline’ translate in French?)
Does it have to be a glamorous product? (Ah, non, it can be mud if you can’t live without it.)
If this survey has taught me anything, it’s to never forget: in this life, nothing is simple — even the simple stuff.
Did I spot any trends? (Don’t you just love it when I ask myself questions?) Why, yes I did, thank you for asking.
Almost without exception, every woman wanted to include some brand of black mascara and there seems to be a move toward “green” products.
Finally, these are their responses:
Aurore: Labello Lipcare in “Pearl & Shine” and Dior Diorshow Unlimited mascara in noir.
Anne-Françoise: Gemey Maybelline “XXL Intense Black longueur + volume” and Neutrogena hand cream ( “I have tubes of it in the kitchen, in every bathroom, in my bag, I use it constantly”).
Joelle: Avene Lotion sans rinsage Nettoyante for sensitive skin and “any kohl pencil I happen to find.”
Babette: Phyt’s creme de jour and Guerlain Terracotta.
Stephanie: Lierac Creme de Jour Mat-Chrono and Nuxe Bio Beaute nourishing hand creme.
Patricia: White Now dentifrice and Clarins Haute Exigence creme de jour.
Sophie: Roger Gallet lip aide and Lancome Baume Eclat.
Isabelle: Naturado shampoo and Creme de Visage Lavera (both sold in “bio” boutiques).
Cristel: Trilogy C0Q10 Booster Capsules — “my beauty secret” — and Clinique Aromatics Elixir perfume (“For me Elixir is part of my personality, without it I feel naked, it’s the first ‘piece of clothing’ I put on my body every morning.”)
Morgane: La Creme Fraiche de Beaute Suractivee by Nuxe and Nars blush in Orgasm. (Click here and you can visit the adorable Morgane at her blog.
Veronique: Sisley creme de jour with cucumber and Diorshow mascara in noir-noir.
