Some of you may have noticed three items NOT included in my 20 piece wardrobe.
Most women I know cannot live without their favorite jeans, a trench — all the better if it’s a classic Burberry — and that elusive, but perfect LBD.
Some fashion experts refer to Levi 501’s as the Holy Grail of jeans. I don’t know, maybe they are. I don’t wear jeans. I think many women look stunning in them. One of my favorite outfits — on other women — is a smart navy blazer with a white shirt or T-shirt and jeans. Not me though.
Also, love the Burberry trench and think it’s the ultimate in chic. But, again, not for me. Too much going on and then the belt. I don’t like belted coats, on me.
Finally, you may have noticed that unfortunately my top 20 did not include a Little Black Dress. In this case it’s not because I don’t want one, I really, really do. It’s just that I haven’t found THE ONE I want.
It seems futile to continue searching. The time has come to collect all the elements I think will make it my once-in-a-lifetime perfect purchase and take the project to my couturier. The picture in my mind is still in development, however I think it will have these details: boat neck, long sleeves, just knee-covering, slightly princess in shape, as for the material I haven’t decided. Will it be wool crepe or a jersey so I can push up the sleeves? Will the hemline be straight or will it have a flirty flounce like the Alberta Ferretti pictured below — or maybe not?
Until the whole comes into focus, I’ll wait a little longer.
You may recall I bought a black J. Jill cashmere and wool sweater dress last year to test the proverbial waters. (Also bought the same one for my daughter — same dress, different size.) When we tried them on the consensus was, “death shroud.” We sent them back. One thing you’ve got to give to that emporium of not necessarily well-cut garments, it has a no deadline return policy.
*Today I’m wearing, yet again, my gray flannel trousers, a white T-shirt, my black/gray/white striped waistcoat and my gray/taupe/white/charcoal gray scarf. On my feet, black patent leather John Galliano ballerinas. Jewelry: creoles and my watch. (I may or may not leave the house today.)
