Ronde et ronde we go.
This week’s French Elle published its second annual “Ronde et Fashion” issue.
The strikingly beautiful Australian model, Robyn Lawley, is on the cover in an exceedingly unflattering upshot photo angle with bizarre cropping. Inside however, the magazine proved in a glamorous 12-page spread that even Karl Lagerfeld might consider hiring her for one of his shows. (He loves and advocates bone thin.)
The “rubenesque” and ravishing, Robyn Lawley. All photos from Elle this year and last are by David Oldham.
Robyn is spectacular. And, she is wearing lots of color – no black camouflage. The clichéd nude shot was eschewed this time out.
Once again, readers are advised to celebrate their rondeurs in “fashion voluptueuse.”
Tara Lynn modeling for LaRedoute.
In the premier adventure into the lucrative “Big Is Beautiful” market last year Elle featured the lovely Canadian model, Tara Lynn, who has since signed a contract with LaRedoute to be the face (and body) of its Taillissime division.
What a difference an inch makes (or three).

It seems to me, and I may be wrong and I didn’t try to verify my suspicion, I’m just throwing it out here, that the editors decided they wanted a smaller big this year. Tara is, according to her on-line biography, 5 feet 9 inches tall and a size 16, while Robyn is 6-feet tall and wears a size 12/14. My guess is she’s closer to a 12. She also has beautiful arms and nice legs – some of you may quibble over her thighs. I do not.
Having worked on photo shoots with plus-size models, I can tell you clients love good arms and legs. Also, unlike “normal” mannequins, where absolute beauty is not a quid pro quo requirement, quirky, jolie laide ** and unusual can be appealing for designers. For plus-size women, in my experience – and I’ve shuffled though scores of agency cards – they are almost always exceptionally pretty or out-right gorgeous.
Voila, you be the judge.Let me guess, are you thinking, “Who cares?”
What if one day a magazine hires a jolie laide, plus-size older model? Now there’s a story.
** Jolie laide is defined as [having] “facial features that are not pretty in conventional terms, but nevertheless have a distinctive harmony or charm.”
