It’s freeeezing out, no snow but the grass and trees are covered with frost, which means soup is now simmering in the kitchen. As always it’s vegetable soup: courgettes, leeks, celery, carrots, a handful of fresh peas and some Chinese cabbage (it’s my new thing).

Also, later today I’ll make a compote with apples and pears — no sugar of course and none necessary — which, according to the nutritionists I’ve been interviewing is the ideal way for us to not only have something sweet after dinner, but also have sweet dreams.

That’s the way things are shaping up for the moment, but who knows. . . ? My chapter editing is zipping along at head spinning speed and we’re in the home stretch for final decisions on the illustrations.
