But there really is something about accessories that can lead me to major compromises, as in scarves, a cashmere shawl (or pashmina, as Vicki said) and recently a bag, gloves and a pair of tissue thin cashmere socks. I love that sneaky peek of color between shoe and trouser cuff.

I don’t know, maybe it’s because I’m yearning for spring this year that I decided I needed something from the lilac/mauve/violet/purple family and this is not a family I visit often. I’ve had a long, faithful love affair with Klein blue and I don’t see my devotion wavering, but I really wanted something different, something completely not me.

Last week I bought this bag, the gloves and the knee-highs. I do not wear the gloves and the bag together because that’s purple overkill for me, but I will wear the socks with the gloves or the bag — the distance is important, if you see what I mean. I have a gorgeous purple amethyst necklace of big, fat beads that I could envision wearing with the bag and socks, or the gloves and socks . . . you get the idea.
These purchases are making me feel so wild as I veer off course into unchartered color territory. Gingerly.
