My thinking was, you might enjoy meeting Jocelyne.
She is in my aqua gym class. She was when I started several years ago and she still is. As you can attest from the photos, she did not take a two year hiatus.
You can also see the living proof — her great figure. I wanted to find out how she stays in such terrific shape and then I wanted to document my investigation with her pictures, one all dressed and the other considerably less so in her bikini. She didn’t hesitate for a moment when I asked her if she would let me photograph her.
Our interview while treading water and making small, concentric circles with out-stretched arms (not easy):
Q: Do you go to exercise classes?
A: I used to a few years ago, but I hate them. I think they’re boring so I quit.
Q: Clearly you don’t have the body you have without exercise. What do you do?
A: Walking with a group in the forest once a week. We walk about 25 kilometres each time. I ride my bike once a week, that’s another 30 kilometres and, of course, aqua gym four times a week. I tried those bicycles in the water, but I really hated that.. I don’t do any exercise that I don’t enjoy.
Q: What is your regime? Do you have to be careful what you eat?
A: I’m generally quite careful. I eat lots of fish and fresh fruits and vegetables, which I buy from a farmer. I don’t eat butter, but I do eat yogurt. I make my own jam so that I can control the amount of sugar. For two kilos of fruit (4.4 pounds) I use 400 grams of sugar (1.7 cups), and sometimes less depending upon the fruit.
Q: What about desserts?
A: I’ll probably have one every week, usually on Sunday.
Q: Do you ever eat between meals?
Q: What if you are absolutely famished at 4 or 5 p.m., then what?
A: An apple. Maybe an apple and a cup of tea.
Q: Don’t you ever just forget about your diet?
A: Yes, of course I do. If I want an ice cream cone; I’ll get an ice cream cone and I’ll enjoy it. (I love ice cream.)
Jocelyne is 63.
She gave me permission to tell you that.
