Not only am I seeing results from my almost six weeks of intensive — four times a week — aqua gym classes, but also I’m meeting new, interesting women as we splash and tread water.
My latest “discovery” and I hope soon to be friend is Michelle. She is a former model, now in her seventh decade and looks terrific as you can see.
She has seven grandchildren ranging in age from 27 to 11 and has reinvented herself as a real estate agent.
When I asked her how she stays slim, she recounted this story:
“From the ages of 10 through 18 I was obese. As I think back on those years I realize I was probably acting out when my parents sent me to boarding school. Then, at 18, I decided I wanted to be a model and lost 30 kilos.
“Back in the ’60s models weren’t skeletal the way they are today. I was slim, but not too thin.”
She admits she struggles with that pesky mid-body spread many of us regularly battle, but then added, “I’m not going to worry too much about it.”
She eats only natural foods, no read meat and, like so many French women I meet, “never deprives herself of a dessert or an occasional whisky and certainly not Champagne.”
So what’s her secret? “Not eating between meals and eating regular, sensible meals,” she said.
Ed. Note: I love your idea about examining the notion of discipline and how one develops it in the face of temptation. I intend to do a post on that next week. I need to do a few interviews over the next few days. Please stay tuned.
