When it comes to those women we admire for their flawless style, be it classic, classic with a twist, bohemian, crisply chic. . .they not only know their style, but also they know the details that make it work every day.
When there is no panic involved in dressing — as in the dreaded “I have nothing to wear” scenerio when peering into an overflowing closet — a woman has the time to think through what she feels like wearing (mood counts) and enjoy constructing her outfit. For those who don’t have that luxury in the morning, the decision making can be done the night before.
Many habits of stylish women have been discussed in books and magazines for decades, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we are giving their “secrets” more than passing attention.
Take the cardinal rules for example:
1.) Nothing ever goes back into the closet wrinkled, or with a loose button, a spot (I know, we would never do that), or any other detail that would make us look unkempt.
2.) An extension of the above, if you want to wear your silk blouse while preparing dinner, consider an apron. There are hundreds of choices out there and some could even be an extension of your style.
3.) I learned this on photo shoots while working with stylists: Always have an emergency repair kit ready to take care of spots, the pant cuff caught in your heels, a buttom that popped off. . .well, you know.
4.) Before leaving the house, check your shoes. Make sure they shine if that’s what they’re supposed to do or are brushed if they’re suede.
One of my favorite fashion accessories is Kiwi Express, a sponge imbibed with a clear polish. I don’t know whether it exists in France, which is why I always buy at least two every year from the States.
5.) Ironing may not be your favorite pastime, but truly it makes a huge difference. My French friends iron their jeans. I iron my t-shirts.
Or, you may prefer the more classic lavender water. Either way, it could help make ironing a pleasure. I was about to say “almost” but I have friends who liken the task to a zen experience and truly enjoy it.
