The passe–partout dress (or for that matter the passe-partout coat, jacket, skirt, or trousers) is the ultimate wardrobe find. Passe-partout means, loosely translated, that in this reference it is a dress that can be worn pretty much everywhere and not be too “look-at-me” that it will be remembered on its 20th wearing to a dinner, cocktail party, or wedding.
Since I have few occasions to wear dresses, regrettably, I’ve been thinking a lot about finding that little gem. On my radar is the dark navy V-neck LK Bennett dress above. I feel as if it would be a great backdrop for myriad accessories and would, well, passe-partout with quiet elegance.
As I mentioned the other day, unexpectedly I’m at least temporarily back on the Paris party circuit and I want to find that elusive dress — with sleeves I might add. I do own two tuxedos which will come in handy if the invitations continue, which I rather doubt (but who knows?), so I’m covered on that front.
You asked me if I bought any dresses, the answer is yes and no.
I bought the navy off-the-shoulder dress, which I love, for my daughter for her upcoming birthday as well as the navy Tara Jarmon jacket. I wish I could wear that dress, but I can’t. Drea is a size six and I’m not. One of my favorite pastimes is being her “stylist” and best of all she allows me to be her stylist.
Normally, if I have the slightest doubt, I’ll send her a pre-approval picture and if for some reason on trying on one of the selections she doesn’t like it or it doesn’t fit properly, back it goes.
When she wears it to her French soirée in Chicago late this fall, I’ll post a picture.
Do you own passe-partout clothes that always make you feel comfortable, appropriate for the occasion, and elegant?
